Heat Smart: Save Money, Help the Planet

Written by

Winter doesn’t just bring cold temperatures — it also leads to higher heating costs.Especially in Switzerland, where up to 70% of a household’s energy consumption is used for heating, conscious heating practices are becoming increasingly important. With a few targeted adjustments and practical tips, you can save both money and the environment.

Why efficient heating matters

Space heating and hot water account for 85% of the energy consumed in Swiss households. Optimizing your heating habits can significantly reduce this consumption and noticeably lower your monthly expenses. This is particularly true when using fossil fuels like gas or oil, where the savings potential is high.

1. Use shutters and curtains effectively

Windows are often weak points through which a lot of heat escapes. To reduce this:

  • Close shutters and blinds after dark — this can reduce window heat loss by up to 20%.

  • Use curtains: Even closed curtains help reduce heat loss.Tip: In summer, closed shutters can help keep rooms cool.

2. Set the optimal room temperature

Efficient heating means adapting room temperature to how each room is used:

  • Living room: Around 20°C provides comfort.

  • Bedroom: 16–18°C supports restful sleep.

  • Kitchen: Often, waste heat from ovens or stovetops is enough.

  • Unused rooms: Keep at least 15°C to prevent mold formation.Tip: Every degree lower saves about 6% in energy — without sacrificing comfort.

3. Ventilate properly: burst airing instead of tilted windows

Proper ventilation is key for a healthy indoor climate and efficient heating. Open windows fully for 5–10 minutes several times a day to exchange air without cooling down the walls. Turn off the radiators while airing.

4. Keep radiators clear

Make sure radiators are not blocked by furniture or curtains. Obstructed radiators can’t distribute heat effectively, which significantly reduces heating efficiency.

5. Turn down heating early

Turn down the heating about 30 minutes before going to bed. Radiators continue to emit residual heat even after being switched off, allowing you to save energy without losing comfort.

6. Use the heating season smartly

In Switzerland, the heating season typically runs from October to April. During this time, rooms should not drop below 16°C to prevent moisture damage and mold.

In single-family homes or rural areas, more homeowners are turning to sustainable solutions like pellet heating systems. These are considered environmentally friendly and CO₂-neutral, though they require storage space for wood pellets. In contrast, people in city apartment buildings often rely on gas heating or are connected to district heating networks.

For long-term energy savings, efficient heat pumps can be a smart alternative. They are especially suitable for new builds or energy-renovated buildings and offer a mix of sustainability and efficiency.

Small changes, big impact

With the right actions, you can noticeably reduce heating costs without giving up comfort. Whether it’s adjusting room temperatures, ventilating efficiently, or using shutters wisely — conscious heating helps protect both your wallet and the environment.
